Ragan makes strong push, but falls short of Chase (09/07/2008)

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -David Ragan's chances of making the Chase for the championship went from reasonable to terrible and then to hopeful before he faded late in the Chevrolet 400.

Seventeen points behind No. 12 Clint Bowyer to start the race, Ragan's chances took a hit when he and teammate Matt Kenseth both spun out 123 laps into the race and sustained damage.

Johnson wins 2nd straight to charge into Chase (09/07/2008)

Nevermind that Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards dominated the regular season, the Chase is Johnson's time of the year and the two-time defending NASCAR champion isn't turning his title over without a fight.

Truck Teams can choose to run Dodges in 2009, but will receive no financial support (09/07/2008)

JOLIET, Ill. -- The struggles in the U.S. automobile sales market are trickling down to racing, with the latest blow coming to the Craftsman Truck Series. Dodge will not provide any financial support to any teams in the series in 2009, Dodge Motorsports senior manager Mike Delahanty said.

"We'll have no factory-funded teams," Delahanty told ESPN.com. "When times are tough, there are certain things that are lower on the priority list than others."

Hornaday wins NASCAR truck race at Gateway (09/07/2008)

MADISON - Ron Hornaday Jr. found a way to master the 1.25-mile oval at Gateway International Raceway. He traded trucks.

Hornaday, 50, drove his new Chevrolet to the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Camping World 200 championship Saturday afternoon at GIR.

It was his 37th career victory and his fourth of the season. Yet it was his first one at Gateway, which has produced 10 different truck series champs the past 11 years.

Tony Stewart hires Darian Grubb as crew chief of new NASCAR team (09/06/2008)

RICHMOND, Va. — Darian Grubb never really loved being a crew chief during his two short stints atop the pit box at Hendrick Motorsports.

When the team moved him back to an engineering job this season, he vowed not to run a race team again. But when Tony Stewart offered him the chance to crew chief his new team next year, Grubb had a sudden change of heart. Grubb said Friday the opportunity to move to Stewart-Haas Racing in 2009 was so good, he simply couldn't turn it down.

NASCAR Postpones Richmond Races Until Sunday (09/06/2008)

Richmond, VA -- (Sports Network) - Due to heavy rains and winds expected from Tropical Storm Hanna, NASCAR has postponed all track activities at the Richmond International Raceway until Sunday.

The outer bands of the storm reached the Richmond, VA area Friday afternoon as rain fell on the track just before qualifying for the Nationwide series. Forecasts from the National Weather Service indicate a 100 percent chance of rain and high winds Friday night and Saturday, forcing officials to make the schedule adjustment. Virginia Governor Tim Kaine has already declared a state of emergency.

Gillett Evernham Motorsports sues Robby Gordon (09/05/2008)

Gillett Evernham Motorsports has filed suit against Robby Gordon, claiming the owner/driver of Robby Gordon Motorsports violated terms of a tentative agreement that would have sold his team to GEM for $23.5 million earlier this year.

The agreement, arrived at Jan. 29, was pending an audit and other due diligence from GEM, which could have adjusted the price.

Davis set for truck debut with Randy Moss owned team (09/04/2008)

Stewart, Logano off probation (09/04/2008)

The National Stock Car Racing Commission, NASCAR's rules appeal body, overturned probation penalties for Joe Gibbs Racing drivers Tony Stewart and Joey Logano in the second-tier Nationwide Series.

The commission "unanimously decided to amend the penalties assessed by NASCAR, removing the probation portions of both driver penalties," it said in a statement. The drivers were docked 150 points in the Nationwide standings after post-race inspections at Michigan International Speedway last month. That part of the penalty will stand, the commission said.

Stremme hired to replace Newman at Penske (09/04/2008)

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (AP) -- Penske Racing hired David Stremme on Wednesday to replace Daytona 500 winner Ryan Newman.

The move has long been expected. Newman will leave the No. 12 Dodge at the end of the season to drive for Tony Stewart's new team. Stremme has been under contract as a test driver for Penske waiting for an open Sprint Cup seat.

Changing lanes! Dario returns to Indy (09/03/2008)

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Dario Franchitti will leave NASCAR and return to IndyCar in 2009 as the replacement driver for Dan Wheldon at Chip Ganassi Racing.

The move was announced yesterday by Ganassi, who also signed a multi-year extension with Target for both his open-wheel and NASCAR programs.

Sources: Team Red Bull GM Frye mulling move to Stewart Haas (09/02/2008)

Longtime Sprint Cup Series team executive Jay Frye has been offered a contract by Stewart Haas Racing, and is mulling a departure from Team Red Bull before season's end to accept a management position at SHR, ESPN.com has learned.

Sources close to Stewart Haas confirmed Monday that Frye is the man they've targeted to run the organization's day-to-day operations. He is expected to accept, sources said, and would be titled vice president/general manager.

Ragan Set For UPS Backing In 2009 (09/02/2008)

UPS has reportedly reached to a multiyear agreement with Roush-Fenway Racing to sponsor David Ragan and the No. 6 Ford Fusion next season, with an official announcement expected within the next two weeks.

UPS will leave Michael Waltrip Racing at the end of the 2008 campaign, after backing Dale Jarrett and David Reutimann for the last two years. Ragan is in his second year of Sprint Cup competition, and ranks as one of NASCAR’s most improved drivers. He is currently 13th in the championship standing, just 17 points out of the Chase with one regular season race remaining.

Announcement of new drug policy imminent (09/02/2008)

FONTANA, Calif. -- NASCAR chairman and CEO Brian France said Sunday that the sanctioning body would announce an expansion to its drug-testing policy "shortly -- in a couple weeks."

NASCAR currently tests drivers for "reasonable suspicion" and imposes some of the harshest penalties for failed drug tests in professional sports. France said the expansion of the policy will deal with the testing end of the equation but stopped short of saying NASCAR would incorporate random testing.

Stremme says decision on future could come within next week (09/01/2008)

FONTANA, Calif. – David Stremme doesn’t seem worried at all about talk that other people have possibly spoken to Penske Racing about driving the No. 12 NASCAR Sprint Cup car next year.
 
Stremme, who signed earlier this year as a test driver for Penske to go along with his Nationwide Series driving duties for Rusty Wallace Racing, has been considered the primary candidate for the job the last few weeks.
